July 30
We’re not going to make the August 1 opening day as hoped. Repairing the floor is taking much longer than expected. To help our customers, we’re going to sell basic supplies out of the “warehouse”. Volunteers are welcome to help starting Saturday morning. Current tasks are checking out drains/cleanouts, sweeping, painting ceiling panels, moving and organizing lots of stuff. Call the store phone 408-297-0840 in the morning to find out if we are there.
July 24-25
Moving Day. Starting Saturday 8am at 630 Laurelwood Road, Santa Clara, CA (Public Storage) or meet us at 51 Notre Dame at 7:30 to rideshare. Call the store phone for updates as the day progresses. 408-297-0840 Continue on Sunday until finished.
July 16, 2010
Signed the lease. The new home for Andy’s Pet Shop and the Homeless Pet Adoption Center is 51 Notre Dame Ave, San Jose 95113. Plan to open for business by August 1. Lots to do, and help preparing the new space and moving is much appreciated. The “Help Us” link gives more information about what we need.
The new place is just about a mile from the old store. It’s twice as big which means more quality products to choose from, and more wonderful pets available. There’s a dedicated parking lot, easy access from Hwy 87, one block from public transport, and a big wall for a beautiful new mural. We’re in downtown San Jose, 1 block behind the classic old De Anza Hotel, in the shadow of the Axis luxurious high-rise. From Henry’s World Famous Hi-Life, turn under Hwy 87 and you are at the back entrance to our parking lot.
You are welcome to drive by and check out the new space in “before” configuration. Be warned! The docent-led tours are held at random intervals, so you might have to take a self-guided tour. Also, be warned that you may be handed a scrub brush, paint brush, artist brush, toilet brush, or wire brush to participate first-hand in the joys of volunteerism for a worthy cause.
We will bring in inventory as soon as possible. Harrison’s Bird Food is available, and hay for bunnies. Until we reopen, we recommend the following:

High-quality pet food, supplies, and advice offered 7 days a week.
Check our calendar for classes, adoptions fairs, grooming clinics, and more. VIP Petcare Services offers low-cost vaccination clinics in the Bay Area. The last clinic at our current location was Saturday, January 30. We hope to continue with low-cost shots when we find a new home. Stay tuned. You can check VIPs website for other times and locations. If you need Frontline, or Advantage for flea protection, we sell those and we also sell do-it-yourself 5-in-1 shots for dogs.

History
Andy and his wife Geraldine Camilleri opened a pet shop on The Alameda in what used to be California Highway Patrol headquarters. CHP cruisers were parked in the old garages out back. Andy’s Pet Shop was known for exotic animals and customers who today are parents and grandparents recall seeing the monkeys and rare birds when they were children. Look closely at the old lighted signs out front and you’ll see one that says “Monkeys”. Mrs. Camilleri continued the business after her husband’s death and was well-known and widely respected in the pet trade. When she passed on, the daughters sold the business in 1993 and the store changed hands a couple more times. In December 2007, Lissa Shoun and Eric Bong became the owners. Today all the pets in the shop come from a shelter, a non-profit rescue group, or are surrendered for rehoming due to foreclosure, illness, etc.
